Rosalie Ann Altena was born on Aug. 17, 1950, to Wilmer and Kathleen Altena in Hull, Iowa. Rosalie was raised in Carmel, Iowa, and graduated from Sioux Center High School. She graduated from Central College in Pella, Iowa, and later earned her master’s degree in interdisciplinary arts from Columbia College in Chicago, Ill.

Rosalie made many places her home, including Carmel, Sioux Center and Pella, Iowa, where her two sons, Aaron and Joe, were born and raised. From there, her pilgrimage took her to Chicago, Kansas City, Ghana, Jamaica, North Carolina, Maine, Ohio, Texas, New Mexico, California, Washington and her final resting place of Astoria, Ore.

Rosalie was an amazing artist. She loved painting and writing with her creative energy and spirit, and added her intricate touches of beauty wherever she saw a home for them. She brought warmth and light and color to all her surroundings and everyone in her life.

Rosalie was an adventurer, always prepared for anything, and loved camping, hiking, and exploring trips. She had a deep appreciation and connection to the natural world, and absolutely loved being by the water.

Rosalie was the proud mother of two sons and three grandsons. She loved any type of outdoor activity with her son, Joe, and extended trips to Aaron’s home to connect with her grandsons. She loved her boys well with nurturing, wisdom and freedom to grow.

She especially enjoyed reunions with all her siblings and mother in California in recent years, as well as the occasional rendezvous with cousins, aunts and uncles and countless friends. Rosalie was a wonderful friend to many, and continued to find more people who loved her dearly at every turn in her journey.

Rosalie is survived by her mother, Kathleen Altena; oldest son, Aaron Lubach, his wife, Sarah, and their three sons; youngest son, Joe Lubach and his wife, Reyna; sister, Deb, her husband, Elson Schut, and their family; brother, Dan Altena and wife, Sandi, and their family; brother, David Altena; as well as family and friends throughout the world.
